Prisoner of Azkaban and the Maurader's Map

Have you ever really really thought about the Maurader's Map?  Like the fact that Fred and George was in possession of this map for at least 3-4 years and NEVER noticed that a dead man's name popped up in their brother's dormitory?  They knew the story of Peter Pettigrew because Ron's dad had told them.

Any thoughts?

hhmmmmm. good point! well for the first few years scabbers was at home with ron wasnt he? while they were in their first few years of school. so they didnt see him then.

but when he came to school they were still in retention of the map for at least 2.5 years.

maybe even though they heard the story the name didnt stick becasue it wasnt in a context that really mattered to them at the time. and they arent really in on harry ron and hermiones sneaking around and getting into trouble cause they have their own group of friends that are older, so when it was in a context that mattered to harry it still meant nothing to them.

intersting thought i cant wait to see who else weighs in on this :0)

I have a thought and I don't remember seeing it in the books....Do the ghosts show on the map? If they do maybe the twins just thought he was a ghost.

Pren- Odd isn't it. It hit me at 2:30 this morning. There is a possibility that they did not refer to the map too often because they had already learned the passage ways. They are very sneaky by nature.

Kavelizard- Good point, I am not sure if ghost are listed. Ah...Peeves show up on it. He isn't a ghost, but he isn't alive.

Huh ... you know, I never actually thought about it, but you're right. On the other hand, the suggestions that a/Scabbers was with Ron at home for several years and b/by the time Ron & Harry got to school, Fred & George already had all the passages memorized are good points. In fact, if I'm not mistaken (and I could be!), I think when the twins give the map to Harry, they mention that they haven't needed to use it for quite some time, which would certainly reinforce the theory that they never saw anything because they weren't using the map much anymore. And also, as they were in an older group, which someone also mentioned, there is a good possibility that when Pettigrew was out sneaking around, the twins were busy doing other things and so never saw him in the castle.

Katt...I think the way it is covered is that they weren't using the map anymore. At first I just was plain disappointed in the twins, I am glad that their good name has been cleared!
